though once again, I am left in want of more incontrovertible characters to pick one side of the fence or the other. rusty brown spore deposits on veil remnants, that sort of thing.

Pholiota would be more viscid at this stage…
the caps here are fibrillose, a dead giveaway for Gymnopilus species.
not to mention, Pholiota are fairly rare in our part of the world.
