I got excited when I saw the gills and that it was on wood. I still haven’t found Gymnopilus in the Appalachian mountains, and I thought this was the one. Last thing I expected was to find a Cortinarius this early in the season. Only a few ECM fungi seem to be out.

by a faux saprophite! Actually, I’ve seen many examples where a mycorrhizal species infiltrates a habitat like the one seen here. Nice obs, Gibbi.
