Add Commentthis specimen was found at least 3/4 of a mile from the ocean, and probably closer to 1.5 miles away. There is another state park about 15 miles away from where I collected this, but actually much closer in terms of line-of-site (maybe 3 miles away?). I’ll try to look there the next time I get to Cape Lookout. Could be several other interesting lichens there, as the area is more established forest/estuarine area.

Hey, this is supposed to be rare, only found in the hypermaritime zone.

I believe hypermaritime differs from simply maritime in being not only more humid with more moderate temperature, but also in being provided with improved nutrients from marine aerosols (sea spray essentially). There is some question as to how far this effect spreads inland. We’ve (Trevor and I) have looked at the range of several indicator species, and it does look like it can be fairly extensive in places along WA and northern OR coast where there are no mountains to catch it.
