Recognized by sight: This mushroom was found on a foray with Sardinian Amanita specialist, Salvatore Curreli, who with Ennio Giusti and Albert Casiero organized the Oct 2005 mushroom tour of Sardinia.

Can you tell me what was the reason for the “muscaria group” suggestion?

I really can’t see any marginal striations on the margins of the caps. In material old enough to have a depressed center of the cap, I would expect striations in most species in section Amanita…although there are always exceptions. If my choices were restricted to the group that’s cited, then knowing that the collection is from Sardinia, a possibility would be A. gioiosa. There are some pictures of that species here:


Look especially in the background of the picture for specimens with paler caps.
