over the course of several years features lots of beech. My memory tells me it was collected from the ground near a beech stump. Early June.
It is said to prefer beech and oak. It has taken me 35 years to find this species! So I am no authority on its habitat. The photo was taken near squaw root with small maples, small beech and fairly large oaks in the vicinity. The collection appeared to be terrestrial.
I went looking for one this the other day, in a spot where I last found it about 6 years back. Do you know what type of wood this prefers? This one spot where I had found it years back is a beech, birch, hemlock area.
