This looks a little like what I collected yesterday: http://mushroomobserver.org/135540?q=1I9M4
on wood, but a bit different from what I’ve called hypoxylon (perhaps erroneously) : http://mushroomobserver.org/98954?q=1IBRe not on wood…

no micro

I have a hunch which extends far beyond the scope of this single observation that X. hypoxylon, like X. polymorpha, is a broad brush of a name, all too generously applied to any Xylaria having no more than a few key macromorphological traits in common. since the vast majority of Xylaria observations on the site are without microscopy, it’s hard to confirm or deny that suspicion, at least insofar as it pertains to MO.
