Observation 135558: Gymnopilus junonius (Fr.) P.D. Orton

Notes: Found growing in large clusters on dead pine stumps in a single area in a pine plantation after mild early winter rain (~5 mm) and cold snap (~10 degrees C). Altitude is approx 200 meters above sea level and proximity to ocean approx 1 Km.

Spore print: rusty brown / orange
Cap: attractive orange with rusty flecks / peels on top
Size: large, some caps in excess of 15 cm
Smell: pleasant, nutty aroma
Bruising: no apparent colouration of bruising
Taste: have not been brave enough to bio yet
