Mushrooms of Hawaii (Hemmes, Don E. and Dennis E. Desjardin, 2002) describes and contains pictures of Hygrocybe mexicana forma defibulata. In appearance and size it is remarkably similar to this observation, but there are two telling differences: Hygrocybe mexicana forma defibulata is described (and pictured) as “deep red,” which this observation is obviously not; nor was it made on Hawaii Island, which is cited as the range of Hygrocybe mexicana forma defibulata in Hemmes et al.
