The volva is often lacking on species of sect. Validae. They have both a gelatinizing cap surface (gets slippery) and a powdery universal veil (breaks up easily) and the volva can easily be lost from the cap and teh base of the stem…both.

I am learning Amanita slowly. There was/is a lack of volva on these as I found several today. It has taken me awhile to learn that this is one of the key distinctions between it and other Amanita species.
