At first I thought they were some crazy kinda chrysocystidium or something until I realized it was water. They look JUST like chrysocystidia.

I assume KOH or water is enough to show the yellow pseudocystidia?

Put this in section Rhodocybe away from hirneola which is in section decurrentes (they are pretty macroscopically similar though).

You should have caelata in California though. Have you checked for cystidia?

we have a similar looking species out west that sometimes gets called R. hirneola.
I would love to have genetic data comparing them.
