Recognized by sight: Typical shape; ornamentation on the cap; and ring. Looks close to Amanita pantherina, but without knowing more about the Amanita of South Africa I don’t feel confident identifying it to species. The cap ornamentation seems dense compared to what I’ve called A. pantherina in the western US and most of the photos under that name in MO. Amanita regalis is another possibility, but I’ve never personally seen that species.

Since the material was found with European trees…

and since a number of European species of Amanita have been exported to Africa, it is plausible that this mushroom is what it looks like, namely A. pantherina.
