Growing on dead wood. At first glance I thought it was Ganoderma tsugae but wonder now due to black knob (versus varnished knob on G. tsugae) and expanded pore surface showing that this obs is perennial (G. tsugae is annual).

Just saw photo of immature specimen of F. pinicola in “Mushrooms for Health” by Greg A. Marley and these are the same but in their immature state.
