Notes: Black, elongated dead area near base of the trunk a large living swamp maple (acer rubrum). According to a 2013 article by plant pathologist Cynthia L. Ash at Univ. of Minn. Ext.: “… V. dahlia is the species that most commonly attacks woody ornamentals in the United States.”
