Long live the unknown.
Vaginatae from a photograph.
So I don’t think that one can get much closer to a name than the sectional level or to exclude the taxa in sect. Vaginatae that have weak volval sacs that break up and turn gray.
The best that can be done at the present is to document collections when fresh, dry them well, be sure they are properly stored to keep them dry, and study the genetics and micromorphology when time and other resources are available.
Personally, I find the section fascinating and challenging. I have spent two decades working on the section with a small number of publications and the website pages being what I have to show for it. I feel I’ve made progress, but the number of unknown species that I have not encountered must be very high. It inspires awe to think of the size of the job…..
