I totally get where sometimes you just can’t bear to dig up these beauties! ;)

Hope that you can run across more in the future. Very interesting amanita, and not one that resembles any known species that I can think of. In addition to that “whale shark” cap, the stipe appears to be flocculent as well as a bit yellow, with what appears to be red staining at the base.

Perhaps it’s something new in section validae?

or if there is no name, then the number of OBS.

That is a staggeringly beautiful specimen. The cap coloration reminds me of the whale shark. Did it have a ring on the stem? Was the volva sack-like or more like that in Amanita velatipes?
