that isn’t R. compacta!

Modesta is one that I think I can recognize, but only with high confidence when the fruit body is young and shows the thick bloom on the cap. I haven’t yet run across any newly emerged modesta fruit bodies this summer.

Can anyone suggest what it is about this obs that pushes the envelope on confidence? I can find no online info (nor in any of my field guides) about the FeSO4 modesta reaction. Sadly, I do not own a copy of Ray Fatto’s Russula book.
