Observation 140507: Amanita “sp-S01” Tulloss crypt. temp.

Two groups of an Amanita sp. collected under Eastern White Pine. The very viscid caps are cream with a darker tan center and have a striate margin (50% of the radius) The caps of young specimens have loosely attached volval remnants, which easily slide of the viscid pileus and were absent on more mature specimens. Specimens with fully expanded caps stood 15-20 cm tall. I collected and dried the picturesque younger group (LVK13101) separately from the older more expanded examples (LVK13102). However, both were growing very close together (4 feet apart), have identical spores and are undoubtedly the same species. The first 4 pictures are the younger collection and pictures 5-6 are the more mature examples. Spores are nonamyloid and the interior of the spores shrivel when mounted in Melzers (see photomicrographs). Spores for measurement were taken from a white spore print on glass and were mounted in 20% glycerin/water. The 20 spore average was 9.5 × 6.9 microns with a Qm = 1.39 (ellipsoid).

Thanks for the comment Rod. The rainy 10 days I spent in Southern Maine this July were an Amanita bonanza. I’m normally more interested in Inocybe and Entoloma, but there were so many beautiful Amanitas is such good condition that I could not resist making some good collections. All are dried and in my personal herbarium. I’ll post more to MO as I do the micro ….

The appearance and the spore size/shape…

suggest Amanita sp-S01 (that’s ess-zero-one) to me. Have you ever tried the sporographs on www.amanitaceae.org? You can go directly from the techtab of a species to the “user sporograph” page which allows you to enter your own data and get it graphically compared to the data from the site’s description of a given mushroom. Sometimes this is very helpful in sorting out possible identifications. There are several relevant “teaching topics” (upper left of species pages) that are relevant to using the sporographs…for example the “teaching topic” on how to write a range for some value like length, width, and Q.
