Observation 140547: Amanita rubescens sensu auct. amer.

This Amanita sp. was collected in grass under an Oak. The spores show a stronger amyloid reaction of ruptured spores in Melzers, which I also see in other species that I believe are in the subgenus Lepidella, section Validae. The white spore print was taken on glass and these mature spores were used for microscopy. The above mentioned amyloid reaction and shriveling of spore contents is seen in Melzers, while 20% glycerin/water was used when measuring spores. The 20 spore average was 9.0 × 6.8 microns with Qm = 1.33 (ellipsoid).

Despite the slight pigmentation of the cap (possibly due to bruising at least in part?), the ITS and LSU genes say this is the same as Amanita rubescens var. alba Coker.

I think we have somethings to learn about white-capped taxa. Some white-capped specimens clearly are white variants of species that commonly have pigmentation. In the case of rubescens var. alba (which seems to be a good species on its own), the most common recorded color for the caps (given the data we’ve collected so far) is white.

There are a few Kuzma folks out there of note. But I do not think my Kudzma (with the “D”) is related to any of them. There was a long time weather man in Pittsburgh, Bob Kudzma, but he wasn’t related either. My father was the only Kudzma to make it to the US during the war and Lithuania’s occupation. I do not know of any others that would have come over before the 40’s.

Thanks for the comment … yes, I’m fortunate to have a very nice micro setup. Zeiss and Leitz objectives, all Plan Fluotars, Plan APO’s, etc. Over the years I’ve amassed a very good optical stable (all from 1970-80 manufacture). My interest in microscopy and photomicrography predate my increasingly serious mycological studies, which started in the late 80’s when we first met at NJMA. I use the Piximetre software for spore measurement from the photomicrographs and am very carefully calibrated at a standard magnification. I measure spores that are in profile view, and these should be reliable numbers. This is SO MUCH easier to do accurately than with an eyepiece reticle, which drove me totally nuts for years. I have my measurement numbers saved in Excel files.

Please also have a look at my Obs 140549. Could this really be a white variant of Amanita brunnescens as Herbert Baker suggests? My gut tells me this just has to be a different species altogether, but microscopically this white one is pretty similar to my more normal colored Obs 140380.

However, when it comes to Amanita, I may not know what I’m looking at or talking about … but I’ll keep posting more of the bumper crop of Amanitas I collected in Maine. More to come! I’ll send this one and any others you desire.

This collections would also be of interst to me if you can spare it. The photograph of spores is one of the best that has been posted to MO for an Amanita. A very nice job. It looks like you have a planar objective lens with good focus extending over the field of view. Very nice.

I also like that your spore measurements don’t exactly match mine for length and width because we don’t understand the variation in characters in this “species.”
