Growing near grass among the roots of the paper birch (Betula) in my front yard.

Interesting! I see on Mushroom Expert that the he confirms the swollen foot and the light above with the dark below. Do you have another reference that states this?

The bottom of the swollen foot with a red-brown flame is characteristic of G. Luxurian.

But it was definitely not growing on woodchips. However, there is a reasonable chance that there was dead wood under it in the form of a birch root. It would be interesting to compare it’s sequence to observation 104722 which was found in woodchips a mile or two away.
