I would not call B. miniato-olivaceus “small.”

Although I’ve not ever seen 6" caps (upper bound listed for smithii), a typical 3.5" mini-o is a pretty hefty bolete.

It’s a small bolete, never as large as smithii.

but along with Gastroboletus vividus this and B. smithii form a nice little group (genus…)

How big do these fruitbodies get?

They seem really similar to B. smithii. And if they’re a northern hemlock/spruce associate… maybe comparison is in order. Looks like this species has shorter spores, at least in the couple pieces of literature I looked at.
