It would be nice to get molecular data for both varieties. Perhaps there is enough difference in the DNA barcode region such that the reticulated variety becomes a subspecies.

We observed the same reticulate “variety”. Maybe the variation was not covered in the original description?

Walter, I agree with Christian. At least, you should definitely be saving samples of this unusual bolete. I propose a new name:Boletus hortonii var. reticulatus. :)

Great work continuing to document the variation in this bolete. Maybe with a little micro and genetic work you could write a short article on it for North American Fungi?
