On mossy ground under balsam fir in mixed woods that include white pine, eastern hemlock and spruce. Cap 12 cm., orange cap, white flesh. Pores cream staining brown. Stem whitish, solid, 12 cm. × 22 mm., black scabers. Flesh of cap and stem bruising pale gray when cut. Stem base bruising red then dark blue when cut.
