On mossy ground under birch, hemlock, pine and cedar. Cap up to 8-10 cm., irregular, lumpy, white to buff bruising orange on cap surface. White spines up to 3 mm.,turning grey brown, decurrent. Orange stem, 3 cm. × 1.5 cm., bruising brown. Odor of library paste. Flesh of cap and stem zoned bright orange, yellow, burgundy, cream; tough. Brown spore deposit.
