How about subvillosus?

It reminds of torminosus, but gills and stem are too pale, and I don’t even know if it exists in California. In any case it should grow with Betula.
I have read a short description of L. subvillosus, and it seems quite possible – at least regarding the colours. It grows with redwood and other conifers.

Those are pale, wooly-ish, and conspicuously roll-rimmed at times. The former is toxic, if not both.
