Observation 141903: Russula Pers.
When: 2013-07-28
(49.2012° -106.7694° 974m)

Notes: East Block GNP, in NW “Story Lull” aspen (Populus tremuloides) forest area

Cap:
Deep red, beginning to fade to white/yellow
peelable
7.5cm wide

Gills:
Attached/ slightly running down stipe
Yellow
interveined between

Stipe:
Fairly thick (2.2cm), mostly even/ slightly tapered at base
Tall (about 9cm from very base of specimen
Rosy red like cap on top half (looks like a Kool-aid stain)

Taste mild, not acrid (tried cap and gill pieces)
Overall not very fragile at all (held itself together very well)
Didn’t check specifically for any staining/ bruising, but does not seem apparent on the dried specimen

Mushrooms Demystified and Mushroomexpert did not key in a satisfying way…
R. maculata is close, but with conifers (mine was found in a pure aspen forest)
R. occidentalis and R. decolorans stain grey (not sure if my specimen does – never checked when fresh… some maggot holes look slightly grey?)
