I’m just wondering if it might be peckiana. This species often has a “false internal limb” of the volva. The stipe context splits near the base (inside the volva) making a recurved scale that encircles the stem base and looks like a volva inside a volva. Kauffman, himself, checked the tissue and confirmed that it was stipe tissue, not volval tissue…if I remember correctly.
