Observation 142543: Russula fragilis sensu auct. amer.

Scattered in conifer duff under Tsuga, Abies, Picea, and Betula along A.T. across from
Fork Ridge trail, GSMNP
Pileus: 24-45mm, 11B4, 13E3-4, 3F4, 19D5-6 (green in center), convex to plano-convex,
convex in age, shiny metallic, smooth, viscid when wet; margin straight to incurved, TS,
concentrically wrinkled when drying; context white, solid, cushiony; odor none, taste
starts weakly acrid and builds; cuticle peels ¾; KOH bright orange; SP B
Lamellae: cream to white, adnate, thin, breaking easily, between close and subdistant
when young and subdistant in age, occasionally forking from base, no lamellulae; guaiac
neg, PDAB margin blue
Stipe: 41-47 × 7-10mm, white discoloring to cray in age, central, MLR; context white,
stuffed, soft; guaiac neg, FeSO4 surface neg and context purple brown, PDAB blue on surface
and context (after 30 secs)
Spores: broadly ellipsoid, (7.6-)6.9-6.4-5.9(-5.7) × (5.4-)5.0-4.7-4.4 µm, Q= (1.47-)1.43-1.35-1.28(-1.22), weakly amyloid plage (brown); ornamentation blunt warts with many low connectives creating a reticulum, (0.6-)0.5-0.4 µm
Cystidia: abundant, (50-)48-46-43 × (12.7-)11.9-10.6-9.3(-8.5) µm, SV + (less so in cheilocystidia) cylindrical to conical, apex mucronate, filled with contents
Pileipellis: composed of two distinct layers (~240 microns), suprapellis poorly gelatinized cutis with protruding elements; dermatocystidia SV+ (brown) with contents, single septate, ends often with median constriction and acuminate apex, otherwise narrowly clavate to cylindrical; subpellis dense ixocutis with long, SV+, aseptate, cylindric dermatocystidia oriented parallel with cutis
