On mossy ground under balsam fir in mixed woods. Clustered. Caps irregular in shape with wavy margin, overlapping one another, smooth feel, each up to 10 cm., cream to pale orange, thick whitish flesh, firm but not tough. Pores tiny, white, decurrent, shallow tubes. Stem whitish, up to 4 cm. × 2.5 cm., solid whitish flesh. Pleasant odor and taste but tending to maraschino cherry and slightly bitter. KOH on cap flesh turns purple.
