Observation 142795: Entoloma abortivum (Berk. and M.A. Curtis) Donk

No herbarium specimen

Notes: Cap pale gray, 28 mm, dry, central bump, scurfy at margin. Gills cream to pinkish, free to adnex. Stem 32 mm. × 3-4 mm. Growing on decayed wood. White mycelia at base. Spore deposit pink brown. Unpleasant (chemical) taste.

This specimen has a lot of the characteristics of E. abortivum including taste but it was attached to decayed wood while E. abortivum is described as growing near decayed wood.

This does look like it could be Entoloma (if gills are adnex rather than free) but I’m bothered by the fact that I can’t find any mention of Entoloma species that grow on well rotted wood. Any ideas?

What makes you think this is Entoloma? The spore print is more brown than pink, the gills are free and it’s growing on wood. I think most Entolomas are terrestrial with attached gills. Do you have a species in mind? I think this looks like Pluteus pellitus as described by David Arora in Mushrooms Demystified.
