Notes: On ground under hemlock, balsam fir and poplar in mixed woods. Cap up to 12 cm., brown, dry, kid leather feel, irregular, whitish flesh. Pores rust brown, tubes yellow brown and up to 25 mm. in length sunken at stem. Stem purple brown, up to 60 mm. × 30 mm., swollen base. Rusty brown spore deposit.
