On mossy ground in mixed woods including birch, poplar and beech and various conifers. Cap 50 mm., gray brown, smooth, white flesh. Tubes tan, up to 12 mm., depressed at stem. Pores whitish and small. Stem whitish, 80 mm. × 10-15 mm., dark brown to black scabers, solid, enlarging base. No bruising when cut. Pleasant taste.
