where there is hemlock, and usually various hardwoods. NAB/BRB emphasizes “broadleaf” trees.

As for the purplish cap color, here’s a couple I found yesterday… with quite a bit of purple in the cap color… at least as interpreted by my camera.

except the cap is a little more vividly red/purple than I usually see with this species.

What was the habitat? Trees?

from my experience both the cap and stipe colors don’t….

…correspond to any of the B. bicolor I’ve ever seen in the east. I’m not familar with MI though so maybe something going on there outside my experience. From the macro view there’s too much yellow in the stipe and too much pink/purple in the cap for bicolor in the usual sense.

does have slight cheese odor w/ slow stain?

I think every call I saw Robert make this year has been dead on. I agree the cap does seem to have pink which boletus miniato has
