Observation 142963: Leccinum Gray

When: 2013-08-16

Collection location: Lackawanna State Forest, Thornhurst, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

No specimen available

Once upon a time I called all of the local robust red-capped scaber stalks “aurantiacum.” But I wonder about this one, as the scabers are all completely black and the cap is a very dark red.

Staining of context agrees with aurantiacum… pinkish followed by darkening, vinaceous in the stipe base.

With mixed conifers.
