Recognized by sight: Reddening of cut cuticle a strong feature. In Arora, Mushrooms Demystified. R. dissimulans is also in the same group, and also reddening where damaged.

A different location for this phenotype.

Certainly one of the reddening Russulas. But which one?

Why not a photo of the stipe? One overhead of the cap would be valuable too. Probably not R. nigricans, which turns quickly black although it is ususally the first Russula of the year on the Pacific coast.
