due to a tightly adhering volva as the stipe elongates some volval tissues are carried upwards and form zones or scales.

it is common for the basal rim-like bands of universal veil to pull apart and take on the appearance of scales. Interesting, though, the reddish staining on the bulb. Cap color and pure white scales on cap point toward muscaria var. guessowii.
