In situ, at base of Quercus palustris. Largish specimen, very hard, deeply cracked.

I’m not sure whether the gleba showing thru the peridium is black or dark purple.

Gleba and peridium. I used my fingernail to pry this open on the left-hand side.

Base with rhizomorphs. This was hard to dislodge, and the bottom could easily have broken off.
