Observation 144337: Hydnum repandum L.
When: 2013-08-31
Collection location: Perry, Maine, USA [Click for map]
No herbarium specimen

Notes: On ground in mixed woods. Cap 16 cm., cream with yellow orange cast, wavy, inrolled margin. Spines decurrent, cream and up to 11 mm, bruising yellow brown. Stem 3 cm. wide x ? (collector cut it in error). Cap flesh white, firm to brittle not tough, bruising yellow brown. No odor. Mild to slightly bitter taste. KOH on cap negative. I thought this looked like H. repandum but didn’t think it was because of the size. I was surprised to learn that they can be this big.
