Notes:
On ground, mixed woods. Cap red brown, up to 6 cm., coarsely scaly/knobbed, sunken center, white margin bruising black. Spines gray brown bruising red brown. Flesh dark brown. Cap and stem tough and corky. A somewhat fragrant odor. Mild taste. KOH on flesh black.
