Observation 144365: Laetiporus Murrill

When: 2013-09-01

Collection location: north-central West Virginia, West Virginia, USA [Click for map]

Who: Aaron (CatFighter)

No specimen available

This specimen was growing under a tree, in the grass on the south side of a hill with lots of sun all day.

It was about the size of a football. . . it looked like it was several days old so maybe that’s the cause of the deep orange color.

Proposed Names

43% (2)
Recognized by sight: common mushroom in WV with few/no “false” varieties (so I’ve been told)
Used references: wikipedia
83% (1)
Recognized by sight: Based on the bright orange color and the nearly shelf-like habit
55% (1)
Recognized by sight: The white color in combination with parts still being bright orange suggests this species. However, it would be necessary to see a photo of the undersurface to be sure.
