I added the one photo I have taken with flash in which the colors look a lot like your specimen.

Nathan – I am actually in process to extract DNA from specimen shown. We hit a snag. I ran gels twice but we did not get sequence. We will run again with more checks on the reagents. As my partner says, it is a fantastically powerful process that works most of the time – even with less than perfect technique, but when if fails, it can fail spectacularly. Oh yeah.

Thanks Noah for the paper.

since there appears to be a legitimate question of whether this is C. pistillaris. This would be a great specimen to get sequenced. There are a few sequences for C. pistillaris in GenBank (apparently from Spain, US and China), but none for C. americanus. Anyone have:

Methven, A.S. 1989. Notes on Clavariadelphus III. New and noteworthy species from North America. Mycotaxon. 34(1):153-179

handy? According to the MycoTaxon webpage it is out of print :(.

I believe these are the same species I saw in CT in 2011.
observation 161608
They were about half red and half beige/tan, but none yellow, at least some frb stained green in KOH.
