On ground under balsam fir in mixed woods. Cap irregular, up to 10 cm., pale brown, darker brown over center with paler margin, cream flesh. Spines whitish to buff, decurrent, up to 4 mm. Stem up to 5 cm. × 2.5 cm., brown, tough, gray brown flesh. Mild odor and taste. Cream spore deposit. KOH on flesh green then black.
