Observation 147296: Gymnopilus spectabilis (Weinm.) A.H. Sm.

When: 2013-10-04

Collection location: Cleveland, Ohio, USA [Click for map]

Who: dagmo

No specimen available

One collection at the base of a dead tree that had been bare, no bark, for quite a while. The other seen from the road at 35mph on a raised area that had a tree previously. Pretty sure this is gymnopilus. Any thoughts?

Hard to describe. Very slight fruit edge. Has a mushroom/astringent smell that is quite strong. Not as fruity as Omphalatus Illudens.
