If you rub the stem surface gently, you should get gold to orangish raised fibers after waiting and watching a bit.

it had a grayish-brown center, and definitely had the super short lamellulae between every gill. luckily, Jay had internet access, and we pored over the details of this amanita on YOUR website, Rod! ;)

We both concluded canescens as well. Even the odor fit, sweetish crossed with cedar.

Seems plausible, Patrick.
