This is the artists conk. The word “SATAN” was scratched into the pore surface, probably by one of the resident Fairfax demons of the area, or by Satan himself. Anyway, it indicates that the pore surface stains brown. Under the microscope the spores are spiny with a brownish tint, indicative of the genus. I also found this on a Bay Laurel next to the Center for Peace and Compassion in Fairfax, CA, the probable home of demons.
