Observation 148473: Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers.
When: 2013-10-14
No herbarium specimen

Notes: At last! This is my first time finding these in the wild, and I never tried pom-poms before. Amazing flavor and unique texture. I can only imagine how the cultivated stuff tastes like. :)

A single fruitbody (12 cm across, well over 1/2 lb) growing on a hardwood log (beech? oak?) that was likely to have been hauled and dropped off at this site (why would “lion’s mane” grow in the Pine Barrens).
