Observation 1491: Lactarius rufus (Scop.) Fr.

Notes: First time these were found up there, and I found a lot of them, so no idea why they weren’t found before…

They ooze white latex that doesn’t stain, stays bright white, and doesn’t stain the gills. They are fairly hefty for a latarius, much too big to be rubidus, and kinda dark colored, so not sure what they were.

When you taste them, with a little nibble of the edge of the cap, they are burning acrid. But strangely it takes some time for the acrid to kick in, at first nothing, then bitter, then peppery, then 20-30 secs. later very acrid.
