Observation 149848: Lactarius subpurpureus Peck
When: 2013-10-20
No herbarium specimen

Notes: A single specimen collected in sandy soil in mixed Pinus-Quercus woods during an NJMA foray.

The cap is ~10 cm across. A zonate cap of dull orangish-tan color, with green shades showing through. The gill edges stain purplish then green over time. No latex or spores — “loss of essence” due to old age I guess. :)

A very distinct-looking species, so could be an easy case if it’s in the Bessete guide (which I don’t have).
