Observation 150907: Armillaria (Fr.) Staude

When: 2013-11-02

Collection location: 7700 SE Stephens, Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]

Who: Daniel B. Wheeler (Tuberale)

No specimen available

After yesterday evening’s good rainfall, found these today in neighbor’s yard, growing on the ground stump of a Bigleaf maple tree (Acer macrophyllum). Same location as where Hohenbuehelia petalloides fruiting earlier in the year. I expected to see a massive fruiting of this. But so far, only a relatively small fruiting has occurred. Something to look forward to in the coming weeks before we get a freeze.

In situ. Fruiting 14 inches below top of soil, in a ground Bigleaf maple stump.
In situ close-up. Mass of fungi about 14 inches long and 6 inches across.
Details of annulus.
Cap just forming at this stage, scales not obvious.
Fibrous stipe. While I attempted to harvest the whole cap, only the upper 3 inches cooperated.
