Observation 151352: Amanita phalloides (Vaill. ex Fr.) Link

I tried to recover the stipe base but I could not reach it. It was more than five inches under the ground surface.

Recognized by sight: Smooth, shiny cap within color range for A. phalloides (rather dull end). White and yellow-blotched partial veil, white stipe. Would’ve been nice to see the volva and stipe base. The partial veil rules out Volvopluteus and Pluteus. Persistence of the partial veil is not uncommon for early season/dry weather fruitbodies. A. phalloides is also usually the first Amanita to show up every fall.
