Observation 151518: Agaricus solidipes Peck

No herbarium specimen

Notes: Cap 12 cm., whitish with a few reddish brown fibrous scales/tufts especially at margin, wrinkled, thick firm white flesh, margin extending beyond gills. Gills dark brown, crowded, free. Stem 8 cm. × 2.8 cm., color of cap, solid white flesh, tapering slightly at base. No yellowing. Pleasant odor and taste. KOH on cap negative. Brown spore deposit.

Sorry about the photo. I saw it yesterday in situ but had no camera. When I went back today someone had pulled it out of the ground and broken off bits of the cap.

Used references: Arora mentions that he found A. solidipes in New Mexico and that it is a solid-stemmed look alike for A. campestris whereas he describes the stem of A. campestris as being stuffed to hollow; Kuo and Phillips don’t discuss the flesh of its stem but their photos depict it as hollow
